When, as will happen now and then, I take my work too seriously and grow introspective and sad I watch the swans; then I call Fifi, the gazelle, and then I don’t take myself so seriously. Why? Because I realize that nature is greater than art. My swans and my gazelle are, oh, so graceful without an effort at all, and I must work so hard. I say to myself, ‘Oh, to be a swan or a gazelle!’ But soon I say, ‘No.’ For though they are, without giving thought to it, so wonderfully graceful, they are not the intellectual ecstasy and joy that comes from hard work and things accomplished.
Nature is greater than art, but the mind is greater than all things else.
- Anna Pavlova
